I can't speak for the other MR2 owners on here, but my problem with your responses is that they aren't based on anything other than your casual observations and hearsay (the crap about headgasket issues). How often you see them or hear about them at the track is directly related to the low #'s produced when compared to Miata's, 3 series BMW's etc. The reason the MR2 isn't more popular as a track car compared to those is there's not that many around, and for racing, the turbo model isn't classed favorably due to the turbo.

You can't take a piss at the track without hitting an E30/E36 or miata; partly because they make good track cars, and partly because they're classed favorably, cheap, dime a dozen and there's plenty of parts readily available. The MR2 is going to cost more up front, be harder to find in the first place, and will usually cost more for wear items (race pads, rotors). I could buy a clapped out Miata or E30 and go racing for much less $$ than it would cost to even purchase an MR2. It's not because the MR2 can't handle or isn't a good track car. It's light at ~2800 lbs, has good power, is mid-engine and the '93+ turbo brakes have been tested as low as 106ft from 60-0, which is one of the shortest stopping distances for a stock car ever tested. I bought my car specifically for the track.

this guy's thinking about getting a car, so he's asking for opinions. so far you have provided nothing more than a couple links (apparently to the same site ) of ultra-rare cars and called me 'ignorant' for having never seen one of these mythical beasts you call a fast mr2, which i already left my disclaimer saying i knew they were out there so way to go stating the fucking obvious. add to the fact that you still can't reasonably justify the expense of the mr2 compared to other platforms for strictly performance's sake, basically admitting that the ONLY reason one would pick an mr2 is for originality's sake and wanting to strike out from the norm. i figured i'd seize the opportunity and attempt to warn this guy that the ends won't justify the means unless he just REALLY wants an mr2. if i was wrong about the headgasket so be it, i didn't claim to be 100% correct on it in the first place, again i was just trying to warn the guy.

honestly I'm here defending blackout because he was the only person that actually walked me through this. He never said they were slow or he never even bs'd the car to begin with. Honestly people we are all adults here(hopefully), and one grown man asked for help and another gave me really good advise(I thank you again blackout) then people go and seriously disrespect him. You all can debate like men and give advice based on personal experience, thats what blackout did.

 

o no I'm not sayin MR2's are the shit, i was showing what only a little bit of $ can make the car do.
