91 3000gt vr-4
hey guys,
I just wanted some advice on what you guys think. Somebody is selling me a 91 gto vr-4 and i want to know what you guys think. personally I'm not big on mitsubishi motors ( more of a toyota, honda, nissan fan myself). Tell me some personal exp. What do you think, he wants 7000 dollars for it. Or should I hold out for a nice mr2 turbo. Help me out guys.
Thanks in advance

They are very nice cars and the motors are very nice as well, big potential. But $7000 seems like a bit much for a 91 unless it looks like brand new and has low miles

7k sounds about right for a vr-4, even a 91. They are becoming increasingly hard to find in good condition. Obviously the price depends a lot on mileage and condition. I'd definitely be willing to pay 7k for a vr-4 if its been well maintained. Go through all the maintenance records, and have a mechanic (preferrably one that knows the quirks of them) inspect it. Also, keep in mind these were $40k cars new and the price of parts and repairs still reflects this. How many miles are on the car? Is it modified?

I'd definitely hold out for an MR2 turbo. That's waaay too much for a 3000GT whether they are becoming hard to find or not, who cares, that car sucks. If you're going to spend 7K for a 3000GT, then you can find a GREAT MR2 turbo for that price. The MR2 handles a lot better, weighs a LOT less, and it has Toyota's reliability. Keep in mind, I'm being completely bias because I own an MR2, but I did test drive a LOT of 3000GT/Steaths prior to buying a GS-T and then moving on to an MR2. In the end, it depends on what you really want because they're two completely different cars, yet they both have lots of potential.

Re: 91 3000gt vr-4
Personally, it's hard to compare my car to this vr4. When I bought my car, it only had 22,000 miles on the motor and was in excellent condition. I got it last July, and since then I've only had to replace wear and tear items and keep up with regular maintenance. Also, keep in mind I have an SL (non turbo), so I haven't had to worry about transfer case issues. I'd be skeptical of buying a vr-4 with that many miles. If it's been taken care of, they can last a very long time but thats a big if. You don't want to be buying someone else's headache. You get what you pay for, and 6300 is not a lot for a car with AWD and 300 hp. What you might save now in the initial cost will be lost quickly when the repair bills start to pile up.

Yea 120k service is VERY important. If that hasnt been done like speeddemon22 said then the price should definetly drop at least the cost of the service. And it should be in immaculate condition for that price even if the 120k HAS been done.
The VR4 has a number of quirks to look out for as well, as also previously mentioned.
Id suggest registering on 3si.org and read through a few threads to get a general idea of what you're getting yourself into. And I think about 6000 would be a fair price if it is absolutley perfect both mechanically and cosmetically.
