Question What is causing this squeak?

Just noticed this happening the other day. Currently driving a 2000 Cavalier z24 5spd while the wifey drives the eclipse.

Anyhow, everytime I turn the steering wheel to the left of center while driving I get a really loud squeaking noise that comes from the front of the car. Doesn't happen if the car is running but not moving (ie: trying to turn the wheels while at a stoplight). The sound pulses and almost sounds like the squeaking noise a belt makes. Doesn't happen if I turn right, only left.

I am hoping this isn't going to be a costly repair

check your power steering fluid, and see if the pump and lines are in good condition.

It sounds as if you're putting a heavier load on the pump on left turns, you may have a small problem with the diaphragm in the rack. Who knows.

Hadn't gotten around to checking the PS fluid as it was raining and whatnot. Anyhow, it was almost dry :/

Filled it up and the squeaking has been reduced but is still present. I need to drive it around a little bit more to see if the squeaking will go away once the fluid works itself in.

My friend had that happen in his ford aerostar. he went too long without putting fluid in the pump and it was basically shot. you may have procrastinated too much....
