I do believe that to get any real help here, you're going to have to answer two questions...

1. What is your goal...ie, NA, FI, fully built, budget built, daily driver or race.

2. How much do you plan to spend. This is the one that usually makes me laugh, but we'll see.

While I'm not going to write a book on what to do...I will say stay away from block guards.

In this game...you get exactly what you pay for! Good luck
why do i need to stay away from from block gaurds i heard its the cheap way out of being sleeved but almost just as affective thanks

block guards cause hot spots in the stock sleeves which leads to cracks.

an alternative is "posting" the block. proven to be very effective, but you have to drill holes in the block.

info on posting

Is this something that a machine shop needs to do?

posting is not needed. especially since your not gonna create a massive amount of power n/a. read more. get a helms.

budget build:
get block bored or honed if needed
p30 pistons installed on gsr rods
buy new main/rod/thrust bearings
nice header
intake
get tuned

put it together yourself, and if you don't trust yourself pay someone.
