Low compression. A basic B18C is a very good platform.

The head has a good quench pad, and small chamber design, so it doesn't readily cause detonation.

The Intake/Exhaust ports aren't as high in the head as a TypeR head, so the flow path isn't as good, but with the Turbo providing pressurization, it won't matter much. (Besides that, the head flows exceptionally well anyhow, just not pure race quality)

The block has a slightly shorter stroke than an LS, so you don't hammer the fuel as hard (which can lead to detonation as well.) It also has an improved Rod/Stroke ratio over the LS, which provides a better torque curve on an equal engine.

The pistons/rods will be replaced for strength in a turbo motor. Especially if you're looking for more than 300 hp generally speaking.

The block should be sleeved, or at the very least, a block guard should be installed. This allows higher pressures on the turbo, although it has more to do with detonation causing the cylinders to walk usually.

Anyways, that's a good, basic guide/start for a turbo application.

A little postscript:
The TypeR head would show some minimal gains at anything under 500 hp basically. You'd be better off getting a good valve job done, that will improve the low-lift flow. That seems to make more difference in the torque curve and peak power than an improvement in flow up top, which the straight ports give you. A TypeR head, with a good valve job for low-lift, again, would show a few hp increase, but that's not a very good $/hp ratio, given the difference in the price of the parts.

There are quite a few people on here that could help you with info. Honda-tech.com is another tech site that has been around since pre 99.

I do believe that to get any real help here, you're going to have to answer two questions...

1. What is your goal...ie, NA, FI, fully built, budget built, daily driver or race.

2. How much do you plan to spend. This is the one that usually makes me laugh, but we'll see.

While I'm not going to write a book on what to do...I will say stay away from block guards.

In this game...you get exactly what you pay for! Good luck

I'd generally agree with that statement, but having it properly fitted, welded, and the block re-decked will cost a lot less than any sleeving, and you shouldn't really have cooling issues, unless you get into other engine problems....and home dude made it clear, he can't afford a Turbo, so he definitely can't afford sleeves. If he's looking to do a future turbo, it's an option (even if it isn't as good, it's a functional, proven option....)
