Default How do you properly bleed a power steering system?

My mothers pressure hose on her power steering pump cracked around the fitting and started leaking badly. I replaced the pressure hose and return hose(just for a better piece of mind) tightened everything down and made sure there are no leaks. I then attempted to bleed the system by filling the resevoir, starting the van,and turning the wheel from left to right(about 50 times)with the resevoir cap off.

I have yielded no positive results, now the power steering system makes a loud houling noise, and is slighty hard to turn unless moving of course. I have tried bleeding it over and over again using the method as above, and also disconnected and reconnected the lines to ensure positive flow.

Is there a special technique to doing this,I have done it several times on my civic but it is nothing like that on my mothers 1977 dodge b300 working rig.

Any input is appreciated.

You may have damaged the pump when it starved of fluid.

You have the worst luck :P

Does it have a screen in the resivor? It could be clogged. Also, do you have any more leaks? Sounds like air is still entering into the system.

To my knowledge it never ran out,it leaked at extremly high pressure's such as hitting the bump stops. My mom stayed on top of the fluid and it had only leaked for about 2 days before the part came in and I put it on.

There's no screen, its a much older vehicle. Fluid is flowing continuously and is functioning correctly. I took off the return line with the van running, with a cap on the resevoir and let some fluid run through into a drain pan.

However when I attempt bleeding it,bubbles still foam up at the top of the resevoir showing that there is still air trapped inside,I just can not get it out.

I wouldn't start the car until you stop seeing bubbles..

Try jacking the car up and take the pressure off the steering, and don't turn the wheel all the way to the end of the turn, it won't bleed properly if you do this.

Well the bubbles have stopped, now the power steering fluid just flows out of the resevoir when turning the wheel. Im not sure if its because the pressure being built up in the lines,or if air pockets are forcing it up.

i was told that to bleed the PS system, let the car run with the PS cap off. Then, cock the wheels all the way right, then left, like a dozen times. Keep doing this until no more bubbles are seen.

I've replaced my PS pump in my firebird before and this was the procedure I followed.

Oh yeah, my grandad used to rebuild PS pumps for a living.
