well by far the easiest way to pick out whether or not a honda motor is equipped with VTEC is to look for the VTEC solenoid. they look like this...



if you dont see one of these on the pass. side of the motor next to the distributor or on the pass. side rear of the head...then the motor isn't VTEC. there are both SOHC and DOHC VTEC motors...both working slightly diff. there are also two versions of VTEC for the SOHC - one performance driven, the other economy driven.

you can tell exactly what motor it is, vtec or not, by looking at the engine code.

yeah, so someone who doesnt know the engine codes can look at just the code and tell exactly whether or not it has VTEC
