There are two solenoids which have completely different jobs and are completely different parts, which is understandably a little confusing.

One solenoid is like a big relay, and switches power to the starter motor. That solenoid is external to the starter, and is called the starter solenoid because it switches starter power. A solenoid is just a coil of wire that is usually used to convert electricity to a (small) linear motion, and in this case the solenoid is used to open/close a set of switch contacts (which is exactly the same way a relay works). That assembly of a solenoid and switch contacts (which is just a really big relay) is usually called a contactor but for some strange reason is just called a solenoid in this case. So it should really be called a "starter contactor", but I digress...

The other solenoid slides the starter gear out to engage the starter gear with the flywheel ring gear. That solenoid is built into the starter motor housing and shares power with the starter motor. So usually if the solenoid has problems, you have to get the starter rebuilt or buy another starter (depending on which is more cost effective).

So you don't need another starter solenoid, you likely need another starter.

wow you are very car savy..thank you for the help..if i made a vid of the exact noise im hearing would you mind tryin to diagnose it based off that? im about 9-% sure the starter is the culprit put id like to make 100% sure before i drop the 100 or so dollars

A starter spinning but not engaging sounds pretty much like a fairly quiet cordless drill, if that helps any. Some are a lot quieter than others, actually most are pretty quiet when they don't have any load on them (because they aren't engaging the flywheel).
