Privacy:
The information they are pulling is the same information thats readily available through the FBI IAFIS database, State and Local police DBs. The only difference is, they are able to easily access it remotely now. What privacy concern are you facing here? Your fingerprints are not being stored on the AFIS modules, and are transmitted over very secure channels. Whether they are storing PII or new info, see below in "Data Warehousing".

False positives (TRU): Your prints being recognized as a terrorist or some other rapist? This is by far the dumbest fucking argument I've heard. Do you know anything about the false positive test scores from the MINEX reports? The error ratio is ridiculously low. Biometric scanners, including facial recognition, can pick out identical twins with damn near pinpoint accuracy. Data Retention (warehousing): If you are worried about this, every system, including this AFIS system, will publish what information they capture and retain, and its retention periods commonly called a system of records notice. It is required of all systems that capture identity these days, including DOD CAC and HSPD-12 PIVs. To be brutally honest, as someone who deals with this shit, they are required to notify you of what personally identifiable information they capture, and if they don't I would refuse to let them scan me

Now, the only credible argument I've heard on this matter is tax paying and cost. The AFIS systems do cost quite a bit. Since when do you all as fairfax residents really care about cost? Did you notice that the FCPD are rolling around in new chargers and gas guzzling SUVs and other high ticket rides? What ever happened to the low budget ass cars they used to roll in? I think if you want to complain about misappropriation of tax dollars then that would be a good starting point.

Last time I checked I didn't make the argument that police officers are going to be scanning everyone. There are going to be security issues, personally I don't want my personal information being beamed all over the place no matter how "secure" their network is. No network is completely secure, as evidenced by the fact that the CIA and the DOD have both been successfully targeted by hackers in the past. I stated that I think this is a step in the wrong direction, come off of it with your "me against the world mentality" bullshit. It is a logical concern for someone to think about the POSSIBLE uses of such a system.

 

Out of all the police forces to give this stuff too...why fairfax? don't they screw enough people over already with no very little technology.

I'm assuming since you're on this board you are not a felon or a terrorist, and you are like the rest of us with just a passion for cars. So unless I'm wrong, I don't see your problem with this system.

I can't tell you why Fairfax, but i do know that Fairfax got something around 50 or so of these portable systems.

How do you figure? If you don't have a warrant or record on file, you won't be showing up in any databases. If you do, that means you've broken the law and have pretty much given up your liberties.
