WRX or GLI
NGP sells R32 swaps (engine, tranny, driveshaft, rear diff, front/rear suspension and brakes for all 4 corners for under $10k). That's what you need: A awd, irs Jetta with a 3.2l vr6. Now get to work.

It's a one of a kind. I've seen R32 swapped Beetles and that's the hotness. Everyone's unsuspecting as hell
I don't have any experience with VW's, so I'll just let you know what I know about WRX's...
Yes, they can have transmission problems. But, so can any car. The problem is that people launch them hard. On a 2WD car the tires will spin. On an AWD car they won't. That puts all that power to the transmission. Then it breaks.
Having said that, however, I have around 300 whp on my car, and have had it at that level for 20k miles. I have been to the track many times, and still have the stock transmission and clutch. And, I'm not going to upgrade either until they fail.
Be warned, however, that mods that work on other cars don't always work on WRX's. A cold air intake is one of the worst things you can do to the WRX. A cat-back doesn't make any power.
If you want to know more about WRX's, come on over to www.wrxtuners.com - I'm a moderator there (same screen name) and there are plenty of people who would be glad to answer any question you have about them.

The only shop around here that I would even remotely trust to do that kind of conversion.. err.. actually.. I wouldn't trust them.. but they would probably want $7,000 just in labor to do that kind of conversion, if not more.
I think Jeff @ Underground is going to be looking for $25k-30k for it, but hell.. it's worth it! It's a one of a kind.. he's doing it on a Jetta that IIRC was barely damaged on the truck and virtually brand new. If you don't know who I'm talking about, he's the one who buys all the wrecked cars and parts them out. He got a wrecked R32 and a GLI with almost nothing wrong with it... Good buy though.

i like my GLI a lot...the interior of the car is so damn nice and the seats are comfortable as hell. The tranny is real smooth and i get great gas mileage. Also, as said before, are relatively cheap to mod and make good power. A chip will net around 30hp/60tq to the wheels for about $500...pretty good if you ask me. As far as looks: i actually tend to get a lot of glances from people b/c they probably think its modded when in reality its stock ;-). VW reliability has gone up in recent years and i havent had one problem with my car yet. Hope this helps you out some.
edit: if you are looking to buy new, goodluck. the only ones that are left at dealerships are the shitty tiptronic ones. All the 6mt's are gone.
