Whats a good beginner car?
My first car was a '95 Ford Probe GT... it was awesome, but I didn't know much about cars. I learned how they worked, but never did anything more than changed the oil and waxed it. It had the balance of the factory warranty so any issues were fixed by Ford. I tore up 3rd gear in it and destroyed a cluch thinking it was a race car and learning to do all kinds of fun things.
My Mustang Cobra was the first car I did any meaningful mods.
I'd say get a foxbody mustang or a Civic... both are easy to work on and see what you're doing and learn. Parts are cheap and the cars are reliable.
If you get a stang try and get a notchback as they look better... make sure you get a manual

You can get plenty of decent cars under $4k.
I bought my 4dr 95 GSR for $3200 with 118k on the clock, runs beautifully, no leaks, nice shell, etc.
I'd vote for:
-S13
-Civic (You can even get EK/EM for under $4k now)
-2nd or 3rd gen Supra (I like 5MGE 2nd-gen, fun cars)
-NA6 Miata (get late '91 or later to steer clear of short-nose crank issue)
-Integra (any incarnation, DA's are cheap and fun)
-NX2000
-Z31 Turbo (waaaaay underrated cars, IMO)
-5spd MX73 Cressida, if you can find one
-AE86 (again, if you can find one and it isn't a rustbucket)
I'd generally recommend a Civic/Integra though, for the following reasons:
-Used parts are cheap and available everywhere.
-Easy to work on, generally (although IMO, S13 is easier)
-Very well-documented FAQs/walkthroughs online for many projects/issues
-Generally very reliable
-Insurance is cheap
-Good gas mileage
An S13 would be my 2nd choice. I learned cars with S13's and FC's. I do *not* recommend an FC, lol.
