I've heard this BS MANY many times. Where do you live?

I live in Northern VA, where the speedlimits are purposefully set low to promote revenue raising. They are underset in comparison to the conditions. I've lived and driven through many MANY other states, and no where in my LIFE have I seen better maintained, wider, and larger streets and highways as I have here in VA (Cali's roads aren't as well maintained IMO). Yet our speed limit is lower than any of our surrounding areas. Down in lower parts of VA - which aren't as money hungry - you have 65 and 70 mph zones on a one or two lane road with many curves and turns, and limited visibility. Here on 495, we're stuck w/ 55 on a 4 lane highway with excellent visibility. Explain that one.

You know how many times they've surveyed the area and found that the average speed was 72 mph and above? Yet they won't even CONSIDER raising the speed limit - because they're so dependent on the revenue it brings. No one in their right mind is going to drive 55 on 495. If they do, THEY are a major hazzard to everyone around them, as they're going more than TWENTY MILES per hour SLOWER than the average flow of traffic. And if you learned anything in Driver's Ed, it's that the most important safety rule is ALWAYS go w/ the flow of traffic. That may not be a valid defense in a court of law, but it sure is a rule to live by.

Plus, ppl complain not because the got caught for speeding, but because the police do NOTHING ELSE but come out in full force enforcing speeding. I know friends who hardly EVER see cops on the road. On any given Saturday, I can count about 12 cops on a 10 mile stretch on 66. Explain that to me.

Also, in other states, speeding is speeding is speeding. No one's retarded enough to classify it as a Class I Misdemeanor like we do. That says it's a CRIMINAL offense (if you're doign 20 over, ie "reckless" ) and is just as serious as a DUI. Really? Well lemme give you some FACTS from the DMV.

- For all Americans between 5 and 35 years of age, motor vehicle accidents are the number one cause of death. Over 50% of these accidents are caused by alcohol impaired drivers.

In Virginia, nearly 30 people lose their lives each month in alcohol-related crashes.

It is estimated that one out of every two Americans will be involved in an alcohol related accident in his or her lifetime.

Alcohol related crashes are the leading cause of death for young Americans, between the ages of 16 and 24 years old.

Hmmm...yet I know guys who can get off w/ a petty fine and minor infarction for driving drunk, while the book and everything else the Judge can find is thrown at drivers who are speeding "recklessly." PUHHLEAAAZE.

For your info, what makes the 70 mph I was doing so reckless, when some states have speed limits that high? And some states don't even HAVE speed limits? Nothing...it's SUBJECTIVE, because VA likes it's revenue. Fairfax County makes more than HALF of it's annual revenue in traffic violations alone. So don't come and talk to me about SAFETY

Lastly, the best example is the Autobahn. No enforced speed (although they have a posted recommended speed of 85mph IIRC). Sure, they have accidents - but no where near as many as we do. Why? Because ppl there know how to drive, and ppl express driver's courtesy - ALWAYS yield to faster traffic. Ppl in this country are - for the large part - retarded when it comes to that rule. If the left lane was ALWAYS open for faster traffic, and ppl ALWAYS yielded for anyone faster than them, you wouldn't have these collisions caused by us trying to get around slow ppl like you taking up the faster lanes. There's something to think about.

In fact, in some states, such as PA, driving on the left lane is ILLEGAL on the turnpike. You use the left lane to pass ONLY, and immediately upon passing, you must return to the right lane. That does WONDERS for traffic over there. I know...I lived there for 3 years.

Re: your comment about radar detectors...since you don't have a radar detector, you're in no position to say whether they work or not. You're speaking out of your a$$, not out of experience. We've obviously driven with and without one, and I can tell you hands down, a detector helps GREATLY for speed traps w/ cops both leaving the radar unit on, AND using instant-on radar (aka "pop") as long as you're not the only one on the road at that moment. It's not the end-all, but it's a great help and an important tool necessary to survive in the corrupt revenue-driven state of VA. Heck, in states like PA, local cops are NOT ALLOWED TO OPERATE RADAR, because they don't want it to be used for local revenue generation. The ONLY cops that operate radar in PA are the State Troopers.

Oh, and I'd NEVER give up my $425 plastic box either.

as basically everyone else has stated you are a complete idiot, if you were so smart you'd know that theres a federal law stating that people are allowed to receive any transmissions(forget exactly how its worded) which is exactly what a radar detector does, thats why basically every other state has rd's legalized, because its the law, only virginia and one other place(is it dc?) just completely ignores this law and makes their own state laws, like everyone else has posted its just for the money, thats why they've also put up tons of signs on roads that state theres an additional 200 dollar fine for speeding, wtf? theres a reason all the other states allow radar detectors and its not cause they think speeding is good, its cause they use common sense and arent filled with completely corrupt officials who worry soley about money

but ya you're great you never speed and you're never in trouble with the law, well i do speed and i got pulled over on one of those roads where the posted speed limit is way to slow, especially at one part where from a stop if you just put the car in neutral it'll easily get up to like 40-50 mph, and everyone drives atleast 35 through there and usually about 40-45(speed limit is 25 + 200 dollar additional fine) so i got pulled over, got my ticket, the cop got back on his bike and proceeded to pull over the very next car to drive by, some lady in a mini-van with a kid, but ya i'm sure shes just one of those street racers in disguise and was committing a horrible crime

Don't forget to mention what happens at the end of the month. I've never seen any other state that leaves cops so desperate and determined to meet a very high quota. Any of you guys see a cop pull over 3, 4, 5, even 8 cars over, leaving them waiting as he flags down the next and the next, then just starts writing multiple tickets? And sometimes they "tag team," with cops flagging ppl down and others writing the tickets? Wow, oh yea, that's not about money at all, is it?

I think I'm going to do what I do to slow people on the interstate and pass harveybirdman.

Anyway, I spoke to a Norfolk Police Officer this morning (a friend) and he explained a few radar things to me.

I hope this helps a few of you. As far as I know Valentine 1 is still the best radar for Virginia, but you'll still have to be smart with it.
