Return of the pony cars
FYI GMs method of detuning a motor is to simply rate it less on paper.
Case in point: The LS1 in a '98 Z-88 base model is the exact same motor as in the '97-'00 C5. The only differences are in the air box system, the exhaust, and the fact that the f-body had a traditional cable operate throttle whereas the Corvette is/was drive by wire.
The motors had the same cam, heads, etc... this is why a 305 hp rated Camaro would dyno 300-315 rwhp... same as a C5
I think the new Camaro is hot... get one Merrill.

the camaro looks good... except for the front grill. But i'm sure that can be fixed with an aftermarket billet grille or something.
the challenger looks bad ass... well in concept form anyways.
Both of them are late to the game though. The horsepower wars will be over before either of them get here. Gas prices high... it will be much harder for them to sell.

I really don't think gas mileage is a big issue nowadays. Both GM and Daimler Chrysler have the multi displacement systems up and working great. Just like bad360rt said, the SRT8 chargers get mid to hgih 20s gas mileage. And as far as the GT500, yeah its an alright car but dont compare a SUPERCHARGED engine to the almighty N/A LS7.
505 HP n/a > 500 supercharged.
505 HP n/a > 500 supercharged.
And I've got tire shine in my eye once... it's not that bad. Now brake cleaner on the other hand, that's a different story!

I never even made a negative comment in this thread, old school muscle cars weighed a lot, and had a ton of horsepower, just like the new muscle cars do. Not sure how that made me worship Toyotas, Nissans, and Hondas. You pulled that Toyota, Nissan, and Honda comment out of your ass trying to label me. You were beyond wrong. Period.
Well, if they are shooting for 3700, that's definitely heavier than a Mustang. I'd bet money it will weight more.
A base V8 won't go for less than $30k either. It's nice a forum is in agreement, but they won't be the ones setting the pricing. And for the first year they are out, they will be marked up do to demand.

So you're implying a car that hasn't even been built yet, is going to be better than the GT500? That's bold...
Also, since the Camaro is going to be built on the Zeta platform, it's going to be anything but light and will be within a stones throw of the GT500's weight. Not to mention, what is GM going to use for a power plant? I'll bet my right testicle that a LS7 will not be put between the fenders of a Camaro. With that said, what are they going to do for ~500BHP? Additionally, if GM does produce an engine comparable in power to the GT500's, Ford has already claimed their horsepower will be upped via a pulley swap.

True, but weren't the heads and cam still LS1 specific? Besides, the power output was still relative to a LS1, not a LS6.
There are some othe minor differences like higher redline that was tailored to the design for track racing, the 02 LS6 furthered that difference. So I guess it would be which LS6 motor you choose to compare the LS1 to.
