FYI GMs method of detuning a motor is to simply rate it less on paper.

Case in point: The LS1 in a '98 Z-88 base model is the exact same motor as in the '97-'00 C5. The only differences are in the air box system, the exhaust, and the fact that the f-body had a traditional cable operate throttle whereas the Corvette is/was drive by wire.

The motors had the same cam, heads, etc... this is why a 305 hp rated Camaro would dyno 300-315 rwhp... same as a C5

I think the new Camaro is hot... get one Merrill.

the camaro looks good... except for the front grill. But i'm sure that can be fixed with an aftermarket billet grille or something.

the challenger looks bad ass... well in concept form anyways.

Both of them are late to the game though. The horsepower wars will be over before either of them get here. Gas prices high... it will be much harder for them to sell.

I really don't think gas mileage is a big issue nowadays. Both GM and Daimler Chrysler have the multi displacement systems up and working great. Just like bad360rt said, the SRT8 chargers get mid to hgih 20s gas mileage. And as far as the GT500, yeah its an alright car but dont compare a SUPERCHARGED engine to the almighty N/A LS7.

505 HP n/a > 500 supercharged.

And I've got tire shine in my eye once... it's not that bad. Now brake cleaner on the other hand, that's a different story!

If you don't want to be labeled, then stop spouting off your useless banter every chance you get. Just a thought...

What brought that up?

What does that matter? For what it's worth, power will be extracted much easier and cheaper from the supercharged engine.

I never even made a negative comment in this thread, old school muscle cars weighed a lot, and had a ton of horsepower, just like the new muscle cars do. Not sure how that made me worship Toyotas, Nissans, and Hondas. You pulled that Toyota, Nissan, and Honda comment out of your ass trying to label me. You were beyond wrong. Period.

A base V8 won't go for less than $30k either. It's nice a forum is in agreement, but they won't be the ones setting the pricing. And for the first year they are out, they will be marked up do to demand.
Considering that previuos generation weighed in at 3300 to 3600 lbs, I would say they are not far off the mark. Also considering previuos generation could be had with a V8 LSX motor at a bargain price of $21,000 I would not put it past them. The reasoning pretty much goes along the lines that not everyone wants a fully optioned car, and GM wants to let the customer build their car. You can get the OMFG it has everything under the roof model, or if you are just looking for pure performance you get the stripper. Like all things when they first came out, demand is much higher than the supply and dealerships will mark them up accordingly.

Also, since the Camaro is going to be built on the Zeta platform, it's going to be anything but light and will be within a stones throw of the GT500's weight. Not to mention, what is GM going to use for a power plant? I'll bet my right testicle that a LS7 will not be put between the fenders of a Camaro. With that said, what are they going to do for ~500BHP? Additionally, if GM does produce an engine comparable in power to the GT500's, Ford has already claimed their horsepower will be upped via a pulley swap.
I would not be so quick to bet that testicle. Many said the LS6 would not go between the fender wells, but it is awfully strange that we found out most of everything LS6 related ended up on the last year F-bods.

True, but weren't the heads and cam still LS1 specific? Besides, the power output was still relative to a LS1, not a LS6.

The heads in 2001 were updated to be similar in intake port shape as the LS6, for obviuos reasons, the LS6 style intake. So the exhuast port was the only difference in the heads. The camshaft was much larger in a Z06, but the camshaft in 01-02 was not an LS1 camshaft, it was a truck camshaft. Either way some Vette owners complained that the F-bods were as fast if not faster then a regular Vette. The difference between a 6 speed F-bod and the 01 Z06 was not as large as you think, 20-30rwhp on average. Which is about the same difference between a 98-00 and 01-02 F-bod.
There are some othe minor differences like higher redline that was tailored to the design for track racing, the 02 LS6 furthered that difference. So I guess it would be which LS6 motor you choose to compare the LS1 to.
