I figure I'll put my little bit of input, but my friend had an 06 evo ix mr, he did very little performance wise ( I think just downpipe and exhaust) and was needing a new clutch at 45k, so I don't think the stock clutches do too well against power upgrades

Also, try to get an Evo VIII 5 speed, you'll get the better gas milage

the clutch is fine as long as you don't romp on it and launch...I don't have tons of mods but I have an VIII that put down 300awhp on a nasty hot day, 80,000 miles and still stock clutch. Changing out fluids is a big deal and can get costly if you rely on the dealer to do it. If the car is near the 60K mark check to see if the belt has been done, it's a 5-600 dollar job you don't want to have to worry about.

I have had my 05 for close to 4 years now. If you keep up with the maintenance of the car it should be fine. I about 54k on my evo, and other then having to replace the stock clutch I have not had any problems with it. I am still on the stock transfer case, tranny, and short block. This is with most of the bolt-ons, and several different turbos (9 turbo, 50-trim, 6262). I believe some of the 03s, and 04s had problem problems with the syncros. It seems the other complaints are more cosmetic, clear coat on the carbon fiber wing, and brake calipers fading. If the car is under warranty a decent dealership should take care of the brake calipers. I would recommend getting a 9 if possible, if not get an 05. Hopefully some of this helps you out.

Dude ill sell you my evo. All the cons have been taken care of.

I have 89k miles on my 03 evo. Shep built Tranny/Transfer Case.

The only issue with the Evo is the transmission. Othere then that i would say the clutch. But thats driver error 99% of the time.

Edit:

-the stock clutch is fine for power just not repeat launching.
-the 6spd is weaker then the 5spd.
-the MR is a waste of money as your going to change everything it gave you.
-the 05 comes with a bigger hotside of the turbo. 10.5 as comapared to 9.8
-the mivec motor in the evo 9 is stronger and makes more power then the 8.

Until you upgrade the turbo, then it becomes nullified.

Yeah, plus the 9 turbos come with a slightly larger compressor housing as well.
