to get back on post while everyone else pretty much screwed....lets just put it this way...you modify your car for performance and so called hp gains...you will lose gas mileage...(thats to my knowledge)....your best bet leave the engine bay alone....and work on the cosmetics....such as lowered, bodykit, stereo system....because if you try to make that accord built for hp and speed....you will never get it with that motor...just be like everyone else..save your money...and do a h22 swap...as for me ive got a 99 accord sedan....all i done was put a cai intake so that the engine cold suck in colder air....and thats all that im gonna do to it...im planning on doin a engine swap....and it aint gonna be no h22..its gonna be something better...and thats to be continued!!!

well, yeah, anyone with any brains can tell you that the words budget and performance don't exactly mesh. you'll gain performance, but not exponentially by doing bolt-ons. a swap would net gains as would doing a turbo. but, the question was why he is losing gas milage with an air filter mod. most losses are generally caused by the nut behind the wheel, not the entire car.

 

that is true also...unless your car is due for a tune-up....

 

if you know what you are doing a junkyard setup works just as well if not better than a $3000 kit.

 

I agree. Lower the car and tighten the suspension up and you will notice a difference. New tires and wheels(WIDTH NOT DIAMETER IS IMPORTANT) will help as well. Also the lower you go doesnt mean better handling. RESEARCH EVERYTHING YOU CAN ABOUT YOUR CAR AND WHAT IS AVAILABLE FOR IT. Ask around, see what other people are running in the same type of car. More HP will make you car more powerful yes, but if you dont have the suspension and frame to take it whats the point? Oh and another mod that is overlooked is brakes. If you are going to go faster you need to stop faster. Brakes should be one of the first upgrades you do. You will have to change out your wheels to accomodate bigger brakes but even on a budge deals can be found. So basically new bushings, shocks and springs, swaybars, tie bars, new tires and wheels(if you can afford them), new brakes. After doing these your next bet is to do the drivetrain or safety features. These include new seats and harnesses, a roll cage if you want just to be on the safe side. Most newbies hate to hear this but when it comes to mods, the engine should be the last thing on your mind. Make sure the rest of your car can handle what you are going to do to the engine. I say H22A swap would be good, but make it the last mod on your car. These things take time and money and with a well executed plan you can minimize money and time. Just know what you want, if you dont get an idea first.
