im from nova..i know people up here that do the swap on the side, but no shop yet..maybe datsun dynamic's..when my friend did his in his sentra, he took it to rosen when they were still around
I put down 275 RWHP with the stock T25 Turbo @ 1bar
Stock Fuel, Stock MAF, Stock ECU, Stock Internals, Stock Cams, HPI FMIC, 3" Downpipe, no cat, AVC-R.
Advantages of the KA, .4L and iron block.
Disadvantage of SR, some replacement parts have to be ordered from japan.
I think SR has more potential without being built.
SR longblock can be found for as low as $800. You can get a Engine and Tranny for $1000-1200 (including manifolds and accessories) from many places.
The main reason that the SR doesnt have more power potential in stock form is because of the small T-25 turbo and small MAF and injectors. Upgrade these things and the engine has alot of potential. I think they are up to 539hp on a stock bottom end.
The SR is nice because in stock/lightly tuned form you have a pretty quick car and it has stock reliabilty.
KAT is a good choice too. The engines are cheap if you blow one. And they have good power potential in stock trim.
I would avoid a project where you are going to have to put internals in, cause if you blow it, its no longer an cheap engine to replace.
I think there is more aftermarket support for the SR compaired to a KAT. Your fuel management choices are much more limited with the KA.

that's a good point actually, eric. the sr definitely has HUGE aftermarket support, even here in the states. i don't think it's too hard to get most parts for an sr. the ka has really shitty aftermarket support. with all the publicity 240's have been getting, i'm hoping for more support for the ka. we'll have to see about that.
if i were to try to make the most hp out of stock bottom end, yeah, i'd definitely go with the sr. there's no doubt the sr has a stronger bottom end than the ka.
in your case, adam, i think either way will work. a ka-t boosted to 7-8 psi should be fine, or an sr with slight modifications. again, it comes down to what your bro wants from the car. either way, you can't go wrong. and either way, the car should be pretty reliable as a daily.

Thanks again guys for all your input
Like you've all stated, either KA-T or SR will serve my brother's purpose just as well as the other. Either one will be a fine choice.
Right now I think we're leaning towards a Redtop SR for the reasons everyone's already stated, but nothing is set in stone. So far the cheapest front clips I've been able to find are $2300-2500, which isn't too bad.
I'm heading home for a few days in 2 weeks, so I'll be able to better judge the condition of the KA then.
Again, thanks to all you 240 guys (and you other guys) for sharing your knowledge
