Larry's fenders and such are metal.
Worst damaged Ive seen a cone do was get stuck in a wheelwell and rip up the plastic and nudged the fender out (metal) and the onwer just pushed it back.
Also a buddy of mine drove my spyder at ACU4 and decided to hit a cone dead on at 80 and the bumper slipped out of the clip didnt fall off just one corner had a slight gap and I just popped the clip back in.
Most cones you hit will hit with metal body panels will be in a turn and be very soft hits. (sometime I have several little scrub marks on door panels from cutting a turn as tight as possible)
And most OE plastic bumpers will withstand just about anything. Carbon lips or fiberglass kits are of a little more concern but I havent seen any seriously damaged yet.
Most damage you will see is someone using wheels spacer with race rubber and the stock studs instead of extended studs. In this case wheels come off and its pretty bad. Someone in the last year also had a control arm or something fail and a wheel came off.
But most cone damaged will come from cones getting stuck in undercarrigae and ripping off diapers or one mysteriously getting stuck in a fender well (has to be at certain speed and angle to get stuck or really big sticky race rubber).

Was that directed at me, or in general?
If it was directed at me, here are my most recent battle scars:

I agree with your theory

I'm not biased too particular when it comes to manufactuer.
I loved ITBVW..
after being parted from an engine fire...

made the switch,

People say 240's are easier, but i don't know. The 7 proved to be very predictable in nature. When it was stock I could feel the very nano sec the tires became loose. I suppose it would be cool to keep track of a car's evolution on the net, but never have time.
