Default VTEC on H22

VTEC doesnt activate anymore. Smoke coming from head (just my luck) and the distributor cap is loose. Someone told me the distributor may have something to do with the VTEC not working. Oil pressure is good and temperature was normal when testing the VTEC. I just got the car. Its my first prelude, first vtec, so any feedback would be great. Thx!

was it working before you actually bought the car?
just set the timing correctly, lighten the dizy and check all the wireing that goes to the vtec selenoid.

Check to see if you are throwing any CELs. Many sensor and distributor problems will make the ECU go into limp home mode, during which it runs rich and uses only the bare minimum of sensors to run. If this is the case, you won't have vtec at all. So if you've somehow damaged your distributor, and your ECU is now confused, you won't have VTEC.
