The R denotes ball bearing. For example, a GT28RS has a ball bearing center section.

correct... but there are plenty of GT setups that aren't "R"

no fucking duh... he said there are some SRT guys running some GT series turbos...
every SRT guy i have seen on SRT forums runs a dual ball bearing GT series turbo...
i responded to his remark about SRT guys running GT series turbo's.

as for GT wheels being newer... thats whats funny.... GT series compressors have been around since the early 80's
nothing new about them... thats just a myth.

you can go to any turbo manufacturer such as ITS, precision and get a non ballbearing turbo that uses a GT30,35,40 compressor wheel and a T3 turbine section, but all Garrett GT series turbos are dual ballbearing...

and dave... so there is no argument over GT SERIES turbos and Precision turbos using GT compressor wheels, here is the quote from garrett.

The result is faster spool up and quicker transient time to boost response. The full ball bearing angular displacement designed cartridge assembly also provides greatly increased thrust load capacity over that of conventional thrust bearing systems. In certain high thrust load long term durability test conditions the full ball bearing system exhibited over three times the thrust load capacity of a conventional bearing system.
sorry for your confusion.

also Edit...
not to mention the fact that if you were to cruise the websites of garrett distributors you will see they offer a GT28....
and a GT28r... both are priced the same, both have the same discription of twin ballbearing center section, and both have identical turbine wheel specs.
so does the R signify dual ballbearing or is that quite possibly a myth... i know the answer, do you?

ok so you had instant boost... i would hope so... but you were not at 1900 rpm when you did that second gear puch... i mean from a 50mph roll in second your at what RPM?
5k? maybe 6k?
im sure thats where most of your 2nd gear punches took place...
do a second gear punch at 1900 and tell me your at full boost before 3k in second lol.
a turbo reaches full boost sooner in higher gears.
so if it reaches 14psi at 3k in 4th, its def not making 14psi at 3K in second.

and if my words are not enough to convince you then ill do some logs on the SRT tonight and post them...
or ill just dig some up on SRT forums.

man guys what happend... i was ready to go to turbocharger school dooders.
take me please...
also im uploading these data logs...
in 2nd gear the stock srt made 13.75psi at 4230rpm from a 1400rpm pull...
spiked and dropped to 12psi at 6k.
in 3rd the boost was at 14.20psi at 3200rpm from 1400rpm starting the pull.
4th gear 14.23psi spike was reached at 3019rpm.
once i get the graphed and uploaded to the projects picture page in my signature ill post them up.
