Default Spdometer/Odometer Dead

Posting for a friend, says his speedometer and odometer aren't getting any readings. It's a '88/'89 nisssan altima, he was quoted $250 to have it repaired. He was told the wire connecting to the speed acuuator I'm guessing it's snapped and or short. So he's wondering if he could fix it himself if he just orders the part, he doesn't have a Haynes manual, and I told him he'ld have to take the part of or the whole dash off just to get started.

Just posting if by off chance someones got the "how-to" or would like to fix it for him for cheaper, and no I didn't do any searches

all that he might really need is to take out the instrument panel as opposed to the whole dash. he can order the wire for it and get the connectors and place them himself but i'm not sure...all cars are different so if this helps at all ...

Ya he got it fixed for $250, now he has to replace his timing belt and water pump. Auctions are riskay

So was it in the dash or dealing with the VSS on the trans, or elsewhere?

All I know is he was quoted an 8hour labor fee. I'll ask him if he knows how they repaired it. So far: $1,500 in repairs, $500 for the car at auction in perfect working order now though.
