Default rim question

call me a noob, but today i was looking at a rim/tire mag, and some of the captions under the rims said "fwd application" or "rwd app" "fwd/rwd" "awd"

and i was just wondering if its a marketing scheme for fools, or am i missing something?

sometimes it has to do with the widths, some times they have staggered wheels where its wider in the back than in the front which is usually rwd, then awd is usually wide in front and back, and fwd is just like both the same front and back. someone correct me if im wrong but this should be right
