Default overheating question

My 97 coupe runs at normal operating temperature as long as I am driving. As soon as I come to a stop, whether I shut the car off or leave it running, the temperature gauge slowly elevates to the H. If I start the car and start driving again it will slowly go back to normal operating temperature. Someone please give me a clue as to what is going on here.

thanks.

Ya that would be my guess, try replacing that, and the gasket, and see what happens.

If that doesn't work, check and make sure that your radiator fans working

Thanks Guys. I'll check the thermostat because the radiator fan is working perfect as well as the fan for the A/C.

radiator may be slightly clogged or not flowing enough to get proper cooling at idle.
