Is removal of the head required to install head studs?

 

No, but if your going for pretty decent HP then you might as well upgrade. It also depends on the car, like if there known for headgasket problems like my supra.

Holy crap im dyslexic, I swore I thought you were asking if you had to replace head studs if you remove the head . Man I need to go to bed instead of work.

 

You need to de-torque the head to prevent worpage, and if you de-torque the head you will need to replace your head gasket of course. SO yes, you will need to remove the head just to replace the gasket, but it is possible to de-torque the whole head, and then remove a bolt and replace it with a stud one at a time without actually pulling the head...

 

You should also run a bottoming tap down the bolt holes to install the studs correctly. You'll get better sealing due to a more consistent stud loads that way.
