dont get into cars. Its a waste and it will ruin your hobby. If you are semi book smart, go to a real school, you can do cars on the side. A smart business person can make money in anything, so if you did want to play with cars still do it on another level.

That sound like a good idea but i cant go 2 school bc my gpa sucks. i understand how a technition isnt the best job 2 have but id rather b wrenching on shit rather than staring at a cpu screen all day. i know the UTI representative might be sugar coating it a little bit but shit. u can do alot of things with the training they give you. I dont know about everyone else here thinking about being a tech but i dont plan on being one for the rest of my life. I have plans on working for myself in my own bussiness sooner or later

 

yeah i know what u are sayin about not wantin to turn wrenches ur whole life....but thats why u work ur way up to management position. thats why im takin the Business management class here at WyoTech, in fact a buddie of mine that is graduating after this phase....in 3 weeks....has already gotten a job starting out as a Service advisor....they are goin to team him up with another service advisor for about 3-4 months and then cut him loose....the pay they are talkin about after the 4 months....60K a yr....not too bad only 4 months out of school....i love turnin wrenches because i like to see something broke and i fix it and it works as good or better than it did b4, but i probably wont turn wrenches until im 50 or whatever, work my way up to service writer or something else. All im sayin is dont knock this....cuz when ur shit breaks one day ur gonna have to take it to a shop and get it fixed....appreciate the knowledge that the good techs have.

Start off at community college, and you won't have to worry about a bad high school GPA affecting you. Knock out all of your gen eds in community college, boost your GPA up by focusing on classes (if you try, you will at least make a C in those classes), then transfer to a 4 year school if you still feel compelled to continue your education. Transfer requirements are much more lax then admission requirements, plus you get priority over incoming freshmen provided you goto a 4 year school in VA.

Personally I seriously thought about being a tech, but the only thing that stopped me was that while I thought I would enjoy it, I thought in the long term my body would start giving out and as I got older it would be rougher and rougher to always be laying on my back or bending over working on a car or truck all the time.

To the person who was interested in working for Ferrari or a high end exotic car dealer, my advice would be go to school, get As or high Bs at the very least in all of your automotive classes, graduate with a GPA that is above 3.60, get some on-the-job experience working for BMW, Mercedes, or a "lesser" luxury car dealer, while your at these jobs develop a reputation as being a damn good tech, then after 5 years or so go after Ferrari, Lamborghini, etc. tech positions. Develop connections thruout the local area auto industry, and the national auto industry as well. The competition WILL ALWAYS be fierce to work for those companies, but if you get a position there I imagine their name on your resume would make your career potential limitless.

 

yea sounds like a good idea but then u have 2 consider that alot of school dont except out of state credits. ive heard some dont even except community college credits at all

 

You dont even have to go to college to be a service writer. Most dealerships will train for it. They do at my place anyways. They also do the same for techs. There's Honda School in Richmond, Va where you get paid to learn. If anyone is planning to work for Honda, I recommend it. They offer great support in rising to higher positions. Going to school is smart for having options.

 

I also wanted to mention the salary figures people mention. They arent accurate at all. Most of the pay is all commission (flat rate) based. So what you do is what you get. Basically the harder you work the more money you make. It's a cuthroat enviroment. People hate. It's all about money. There are always obstacles like the slow seasons - Winter for example. There are days when I make less than 1 hour in a whole 8 hour day.

 

what do you all think about the more specific specialized programs like diesel tech, body work or transmission specialist and things like that? whats the pay like in those areas...ie say you took all the requirements for diesel tech, would going into work for a bus company or even a major trucking line be a consideeration with decent pay and benefits? what about government work, like repairing governement and city vehicles and such?
