Get what you want, the only problem is that you'll be buying more plastic when you drop it. My first bike is gonna be a busa, but I plan on only driving around the neighborhood like grandma for the first few months.
anyways, back on topic... I rode my buddy's gixxer and i felt leaning forward more, and his pegs were higher and back.... yea, like the more focused bike that it IS... BUT!!...... My buddy said my bike's pegs were more back than his bike... i was like.. hmmmm... IDk..
But definetly, my take on it was that... I like how both bikes fit me.. The SV feels good, is comfty for street riding and very manouverable..and i guess im used to it too... THE gixxer 600, was perfectly positioned to like... ride on a track, it felt GOOD. period. just FUKIN GOOD..... the thing is that i dont know about riding it for longer than 45min 1 hr without any back pain or some sort of cramp...... i guess you get used to it tho... cuz ppl ride them EVERYWHERE!!

note that my opinion comes from SV "S" ... HMMMMMMmmm!! gots the high performance S for additional HP... HAHAHHAA JK... no, but, the "S" along with other things, meand that it has Clip ons... In case you dont know, clip ons are the Really low handle bars that look like sticks coming out of the forks.
looks like this.

The Naked SV, stock, comes with some other handle bars.. Everyone claims that they give you more control and better feel on the bike... (not just the SV, but every bike)... i think clip ons look cooler.. and the only bikes i've riden with big handlebars are cruisers, and those hanble like ASS.. and not the good kind.
heres what it looks like..

Sorry about the big ass pic

I own a SV1000 naked with the conventional handle bars and my wife has a SV650S with clip ons. After riding both I can say that you do in fact have more control with regular handle bars than with clip ons. Clip ons were designed to get the rider low and over the front wheel out of the wind for racing purposes. If you have dirt bike riding experience, go sit on a naked SV. I garauntee you will like it better than with clip ons.
Well I am going to speak from experience here. My first bike was a F4i 600. The damn thing was a rocket and it scared me. It would wheelie up easy with too much gas. I finally felt comfortable on it after a few months and learned how much gas to give it, how to corner nicely and I would even speed a little.
The one time I went down was my own fault. I left riding with the guys and canceled my gym plans. Well I had forgotten I had taken some Xenadrine RFA-1 and I couldn't concentrate. I ended up dropping the bike in a parking lot. Not much damage but it was enough to spook me.
I sold that bike and purchased a Hayabusa 1300R. I got it for the look and for bragging rights. The bike was a beast but I got it due to the fact it's not going to wheelie on you unless you give it an ungodly amount of gas. The fact it's heavy was great. I left it stock except for a Yoshi exhaust. They drive and corner like a Cadillac though.
I sold that and now I ride a Honda CBR 1000RR. Everyone learns at different paces and everyone will voice their opinion on what you need to buy. My advice to you is to buy what you're comfortable with. You said you're already recovering from a spinal injury so you're already going to be weiry and nervous on the bike any way. That's good. The bikes these guys posted are all quick and great bikes but they all have one thing in common, they will all kill you. No matter what you buy to learn on, remember that it will kill you when you lose respect for it. Not just hurt you or scare you but kill you.
I wish you luck bud.
