Anyone ever get a title from DMV for an older bike?
Seller has no title.
I was told I can get a salvege or abandoment title.
the bike is a 1980 honda
i checked the dmv website and the process is rather fuzzy and there is no real language explaning in exact detail what i need to do and how much it will cost me.
what were the steps?
approx cost?
any help would be appreciated
Thanks

title services are the easiest, like EMC said.
as for the abandoned title way thru DMV, here's what you have to do:
1. take the VIN to DMV and they will give you the name and address of the last registered owner, and a form to fill out
2. fill out the form and include a letter to the last registered owner stating that you have the vehicle and they have 30 days to take possesion of it, or you will be filing for title
3. send this form and letter via CERTIIFIED MAIL ONLY to the address given to you by DMV.
4. after 30 days, if you don't hear anything, or no one shows up to claim the vehicle, you can file for title, or if the letter is undeliverable (meaning the person doesn't live at that address any more, or something like that) then take the UNOPENED letter to DMV and they will issue you a title.
you can see the problem with this, "technically" the last registered owner still owns the vehicle, no matter who YOU bought it from. And they have every right to come get it within those 30 days.
I've done the whole abandoned vehicle thing a few times, but only when I know the last registered owner doesn't live at the address DMV gives me. (Don't even ask how I find that out ) And I know I don't have to worry about the last owner deciding they want the car/bike back.
