ya last night sucked, my new foxbody rolled out of park and hit another car. transbrake and linelock were inoperable. then to top it off the passenger window motor died. still ran a 12.6@105 running lke complete shit with a 1.76 60 ft leaving at idle. now that i know everything thats wrong with it it'll probably be sitting on jack stands for the next month.
I've been screwing around with my car today after all the preignition problems I was having last night, causing me to get out of it on the top end.. What I found was that my idle circuit contributes more to the lower and upper WOT rpm ranges than I thought.
On Weber IDF carbs, you have two circuits for fuel, one is idle and one main. Each one is regulated by jet size and by air correction jet size. The idle air jet is fixed, and the main air correction jets are replaceable in the emulsion tube stacks that install as an assembly.
At some point (throttle position, rpm, and load dependent) the idle circuit starts to taper out, and the main circuit comes in. The day before I had adjusted my idle jets for economy, which worked great in terms of mileage up and back.. I got about 29mpg there and 31 back, roughly. With idle and cruise AFRs around 14.5 I was kickin. BUT apparently they don't taper off as much as I thought and my AF meter was giving me collective readings for the whole engine, far down the exhaust pipes. What I was getting was a lean foul condition, hence some preignition, and the readings were throwing me off.
Once I replaced the idle jets with the next size up, and got my idle and cruise AFRs back around 13.2, things are lookin up. Wished I'd figured that shit out last night, coulda done a LOT better, instead of staying in third through the lights, getting 102 MPH. I coulda got some more. Damn. All that to try to get a lousy 3 or 4 more MPG.. I'm a dope.
Anyway, man I had fun and talked to some cool people. I'm going to be moving out of state in two weeks, or I'd be back, even if the track sucked. That track's better than NO track.
