Unfortunetely that is incorrect. Wrapping film is self adhesive just like regular vinyl your stickers are made from. There are however many differences in the material, wrap films are made with "air channels" for the air to flow thru as the material is being applied, keep in mind the adhesive is heat activated for long term adhesion. Any kind of printed image would be laminated with another clear film, (making the material and colors from fading), adding a year or two to the life of the graphic.

It is applied completely dry, wrap films are not wet applied like regular vinyl can be. Experienced installers use a torch to heat the material enough the stretch it in to shape. A heat gun can be use as well but the power cord gets in the way... It's applied using a regular vinyl squeegee, one end is usually wrapped in felt or a similar soft surface to prevent scratches on the print.

OP, painting is an option, There isn't really an advantage to doing it since the price of a VERY good matte black paint job will coast more then the wrap and it simply can't be undone...

Wrap vinyl IS MADE TO BE REMOVED without leaving glue residue, you're probably looking at $2 grand or so depending on the size of the car, most of the times it is priced per sq ft. Not to mention your factory paint job has been protected against road elements and UV rays for the length of time your car has been wrapped...

disadvantage of wrapping: simply none.

Can you really get a nice matte black paint job for around 2 grand? I've always heard it's such a PIA to do it right, I figured it would cost more!

...its no different from any other paint job...you add flattening agent to the clear...more you add the duller/matte it becomes...

Moving this to Central because a shop in Richmond is apparently in the OP's local area.
