Default Comcast vs Fios

I want to get cable and a high-speed internet connection (yes I still have dial-up) and I want to know what people that already have them think of them. Tell which one you have and answer a few questions for me.
1) Is the picture quality good?
2) Is it effected in bad weather?
3) How is the internet speed?
4) Is the signal dropped much?
5) If you've had both, what made you choose one over the other?

Default Re: Comcast vs Fios

I used to have comcast, and now i have Fios, so here goes:

1) Is the picture quality good?

Pictures look very similar, and i havent seen huge differences in quality (but i havent really studied it haha)

2) Is it effected in bad weather?

So far, i havent seen any difference here

3) How is the internet speed?

ersonally, and it might just be the fact that you have to use their provided router, but ive found that the internet connections using Fios through the router arent very good. It hardly ever connects right away when a device is turned on also. In addition, if you are a gamer and have a Xbox 360, you have to hassle Verizon to install an update on your new router so that the Xbox will connect to the internet properly.

4) Is the signal dropped much?

Not much for either

5) If you've had both, what made you choose one over the other?

Comcast's connectivity is awesome all the time, through networks or otherwise. However, Fios doesnt seem to be completely compatible with home networks/game consoles. Overall, id choose comcast if it came down to it.

I cant wait to move so i can get comcast back haha

Default Re: Comcast vs Fios

I've had a completely reversed opinion of Apotheosis, having Comcast, DirecTV, and FiOS:

(1) FiOS picture quality on the average is better than Comcast. HD is HD, but when you have to lower yourself to SD, FiOS SD is noticeably higher quality than Comcast.

(2) Comcast would go out on me during a heavy thunderstom. DirecTV would go out when it was overcast. FiOS has only gone out on me during power outages, and chances are since the box is on a UPS, it didn't really go out.

(3) FiOS internet speed is available at a faster rate than Comcast, but I don't find 20/20 necessary. I have 15/5 and regularly see 17/4 in real-world use. Additionally, when all the kiddies come home to surf porn, I stay at 17/4, whereas in Comcast it would slow to sub-DSL speeds in my neighborhood during peak hours. I was an original FiOS subscriber and have the Actiontec router, and the 360, Wii, and DS all work great through it.

(4) I would have to reset my cable modem maybe on a weekly basis for god-knows-what reason. I will say the Actiontec router's DHCP server will occasionally fail to give out an address over wireless, but I can't say for certain it's the router or my wife's laptop. Resetting one always works, and it's easier to reset the router most of the time, so it gets hit every couple of weeks. As far as TV signal or internet signal, in the year that I've had FiOS, I have NEVER lost signal to the outside world.

(5) I pay $175 / month for 15/5 internet, unlimited phone, TV with HBO, Cinemax, Stars, Showtime, Premium Sports package, and Premium HD package. That's my final bill at the end of the month. With Comcast, I was paying $65 for the internet, and eventually $104 for similar TV service, and I hadn't even gotten to my phone bill or taxes/surcharges yet. I switched from Comcast to DirecTV the moment the promotions ended because I couldn't justify the cost. DirecTV lied their way into my house, and I eventually paid the contract termination fee to get them out once FiOS became available.

I have no intentions of leaving Verizon any time soon and wish I never had to go through Comcast or DirecTV in this house to get to where I'm at now. The only complaint I have about Verizon is they can't seem to get their bill straight at the beginning, but they are always eager to fix it for you, and will typically give a deep discount for your troubles. I've had months of free service because it took three calls to have a $3.97 recurring charge removed correctly.

Just my very long $.02

I've had both, I for sure prefer fios. It was INSANELY more reliable then comcast. Our comcast internet would go out all the time, and be off for a day or two, but fios has yet to do that. As far as TV goes, the picture is great, honestly, the picture quality is probably equal to comcast, but the guide and on screen menus are much more easier to navigate.

I also have the exact opposite experience as Apotheosis and I have had both. I had Comcast from when they first started offering broadband service in 98 and switched to Fios in 05.

1- PQ is about the same for HD on both. Fios has a definite edge on PQ for SD channels.
2- Never had a weather related problem with either service.
3- My Fios speeds are pretty consistent. I have 20/5 and suits my needs well. Speeds with Comcast varied according to how many of my neighbors were using their service. It really went downhill when they started pushing VOIP really hard.
4- I have not had an outage with Fios since it was installed almost 3 years ago. I had Comcast prior to that and had outages almost daily.
5- My reasons for switching service was internet reliability. I need 24/7 internet access for my work. If my internet is out, then I have to drive to work which means risking shutting down production machines. I didn't have a problem with Comcast for 6 years, but the last 6 months of poor service caused me to switch.
