What motor is in my 93 Protege? SOHC or DOHC
I know it's a 1.8l Inline 4, but I don't know if it is a SOHC or DOHC.
All it says is 1.8l 16 valves and it is pretty peppy for a little car.
The engine code on the Vin is 4.

Manny, I'm pretty sure that should be a BP (1.8l DOHC).
Try this VIN decoder and tell me if it actually works for something other than a miata: http://www.hazmat.com/~mjb/candm/decoder/

It's BP DOHC 1.8. Same engine as some Miata's and Escort GT's. Forged internals. Stock longblock is capable of over 300hp without problem.
Bump up your timing a few degrees. More power and better gas mileage.

Cool, thanks. I was wondering why it was so quick. Not sure how to work on these imports and haven't really looked at the motor, but there is an oil leak at the side of the motor (front of the car, seeing as the motor is in the car all sideways and shit).

Generally speaking, they're indestructable drivetrains. I could not have possibly beat on the two I had any harder, and they ran better when I sold them than they did when I bought them.
That's good to hear. Oh, is this an interfence motor, ie. if the timing belt breaks do the valves hit the pistons? and is the timing belt swap easy to do?

Hit www.clubprotege.com up. They live and breathe 1.8's.
