Suggestions for first car
My first car: 2.5i Subaru Legacy.
flat-4 cyl. N/A, 175 hp. It will net you 30+ MPG no matter how you drive it, plus you will love the AWD in the rain/snow/dirt/sand. Plenty of room, sits 4 people easily. Sound system is easy to modify w/aftermarket equip. The low-end torque is intense, great for offroad and/or city driving. All around, its a bit sluggish in the high end, but what do you expect, its 175hp. Throw in some sway bars and springs and it will keep you very happy until you decide to upgrade to something with a bit more ...umph(Thats been my plan for awhile now).
VERY LOW maintenance, I have put 15K miles on the car since I bought it in February, and I have had 1 minor issue with a cooling fan. Also, in my opinion, the best looking car on the road. The 05-07 models look best in my opinion. Save on gas and maintence now, spend on a WRX/STi w/ mods later
Check out my profile for a pic if u are interested. Are you in school/college?

On the Nissan side: B13 Sentra SE-R or NX2000, they're cheap to maintain, and relatively cheap to mod. You can find one in good shape from anywhere from $800-up, and have enough money left over for I/H/E, cams, suspension, wheels, I.C.E, I have a 92 SE-R with 237k and all I've had to replace are just the wear items, hoses, brakes, etc. the motor and tranny are in tip-top shape.
On the Honda side: without a doubt, a civic. EG or EK are the best looking IMO, super cheap to mod, lots of suspension travel and they run forever. Integras are also good if you want to pay a bit more. Preludes are nice, but a bit overrated in my opinion. The plus side of Hondas is that the aftermarket is FLOODED with parts.
Toyotas: Of course, the AE86 (if you can find one), Celica GT-S or All-trac turbos, or older body Supras. 2nd Gen MR2s also. Lots of aftermarket, lots of forum support too.
Subarus: Impreza or legacy. AWD from the factory on the Impreza 2.5RS, they have really torquey engines and super-close gear ratios from the factory (they are rally-bred vehicles) I drove a 96 2.5 RS and its a car built to blast into and out of corners.
Mitsu: Old school Starions, Galant VR4, 3000GT VR-4, Eclipse GS-T or GS-X. Boosted DSMs are a lot more fun than their NA counterparts is the opinion I get from DSM owners that I've talked to. Again, a loaded aftermarket with lots of goodies available for going fast and handling well.
Your question is kind of loaded, so do some homework, find out a make/model you like and stick with it. and most of all, HAVE FUN! It's your car, do it up the way YOU want it. Hope this helped.

dont go dsm...unless you really want to fix a bunch of broken shit...im with the honda or toyota people, if you want reliable and good gas mileage...its hard to get all of those things you want in one car tho...nothing is really fast, reliable, fuel efficient, and under 10 grand...but good luck
