Storage of Race Gas Metal Barrels
I'm pretty sure its gas vapor and not really the barrel, like know how they design gas tanks with a air pocket at the top to allow for the extra pressure.

if ur getting rid of the barrel itself anytime soon it would amek and awesome pig cooker.FTW. Clean it out REALLY good and go to a welder...id be interested lol
It's the liquid and vapor in the barrel, it expands thermally. Don't worry about it. I had a whole shelving unit full of resins and chemicals in metal cans and they'd pop, ping, and bang all the time. Just temperature, nothing to worry about.
