An 87 300ZX has plenty of potential and is lighter than their bigger brothers. Engines are pretty much the same, although I believe in 87 they were still inline and not V's.
i'm pretty sure they were the V's but they were SOHC instead of your DOHC motor...in fact, the VG30E motor is the same V6 out of the 89-91 Maxima and it has potential

OK the only person that has made any sense so far is greaser.......My 200sx SE came with a VG30E, Its getting a turbo manifold I allready did the euro turbo cams, and I expect to pull more power out of my VG30ET than I do out of my Swaped SR20DET........Some of the myths I've heard apaul me.......Such as the VG30 being an inline six......Or that you actually think that without major modification an RB26 will fit in an 87 300zx, If you think your GTI is killing you on money try puttin an RB into anything except a skyline.....Your best option is to buy another VG30E replace the one you got (Keep it for parts though) Buy induvidual cams manifold and get an aftermarket turbo...the cams are made by NISMO (You could also go with the Iskederian <ISKY> cams) The manifold can come out of a junkyard........The KA Idea blows........Sorry to say but the KA in my opinion will be worse than an N/A VG30E, as for the SR20DET its a good option but will cost you more in the long run to get results......As well as the VG30DETT will not fit....The VG30DE will fit, but again your looking at major mods, (Not as bad as the RB)..........Also remeber because of the narrownwess of the 87 300ZX it doesnt handle worth a shit.....Its to ass end heavy and likes to dig front wheels in the turns......It makes for a great Nostalgia drag import though......Just my .02 cents ........If you need help with the VG30E or need A good deal on parts PM me........As for the SR20DET it would be original but I have a feeling you would be disapointed due to the weight of the 87 300zx.........lemme know either way how it turns out I love old Nissan/Datsuns..........

EDIT: The Old FJ20 would be a good swap if you could find one........

EDIT: as for the first statement of my post Eric gets credit too I didnt see his "Keep the VG30E" post.....

My bad, it's the early Z's (240, 260, 280) that are inline. All of the 300's are V-6.

You talking about the "Motorsport" catalog? Or a real NISMO catalog?

Yeah I think it is a "motorsport" catalog now that I think about it I get so many nissan catalogs sent to me I cant keep track anymore......They go as far back as the L series engines......

I just remembered Keith's 280 was inline. I couldn't remember if the Z31's were inline or V. Either way, they're still big as fuck and hard to work on.

Yep, that sounds like the Motorsport catalog. A NISMO catalog would be nice.

Got her back yesterday. Traction and cornering have much improved. I have to stop back at the shop after work today because my rear wheel is scraping on something (probably where I bent the exhaust); and I left my wheel lock key there.
