can they crush the car?

The punishments vary. It really depends on what the ticket is exactly for. There's like 10 different versions of racing you can get tickets for and they are all different, with different severities. In the end it really has to do with the judge and how they cop portrays the seriousness. Punishment can range from simple fines and something on par with a reckless infraction, to jail time if the judge and cop decide to make an example out of you. The way the laws are written, it is left very open for how hard they want to be on you. With a lawyer you shouldn't be in too bad of shape.

Racing isn't just Racing, it's also several kinds of reckless driving. The laws allow the police to confiscate (crush your car), take your license for 2 years, throw you in jail, and other nasty things. I've heard some judges have a rule of thumb of 1 day in jail for every mph over 90, but I don't know how true that is. The worse your infraction, the worse the plea bargain.

All of which get your ass off the street where it so clearly does NOT belong.

If only there were more tracks down here, maybe we wouldnt read about this crap every day....

if you get off easy, learn your lesson and find a track or autocross to get your fix from now on.

This is actually something the evidence for which is readily available. Back when NC had many tracks throughout the state street racing was a rarity, even though muscle cars and gear heads were not. Basically, as soon as the tracks started to close street racing started to become prevalent. It doesn't excuse it, but it does show that there is a solution. Maybe they should fund it with speeding ticket fines, lol.

That was my first thought as well. For the price of this ticket, lawyer, etc., you'd have been able to take a Skip Barber, Bondurant, etc. course. Anyway, good luck to you and your friend.

This is why I always tell people to shut the hell up and not be "helpfull" when being pulled over and detained. Law Enforcement are trained to engage you in conversation. Why? They will use it against you in court. Remember, they are "representatives" of the court.

The other guy that was pulled over will likely be your undoing. He'll likely roll over (knowingly or not) on the fact that there was a race and both cars were involved.

Good luck with this one, and get a GOOD lawyer. Your "buddy" might have a chance if he gets a good lawyer and the other kid didn't say to much.

In 26 years of driving (I'm 42) I've been charged qith 14 reckless tickets and NEVER been convicted of ANY of them. I've had a few reduced, and the rest thrown out for various reasons... It is possible to beat them in court, but getting harder.
