Evo vs. STI
i think all of the important points have been stated already, my recommendation stick with the payed off car and save up for at least 6 months to a year or more and get a new car then
dude save your money,
i was in your situation, i was gonna buy a mazdaspeed 3 and i had 13 grand to put down . when i posted my forum everyone talked me out of it. trust me dude if you have like 10k or under just buy a car and get liabilty. honestly thats what im doing then later on get the car you want. i guess when you young you want everything really fast.lol trust me dude get like a civic, prelude, 240, celica, etc.
get something decent now, wait for the evo/sti

Keep the car you have and save money for a while first. Once you see your bank acct rising, you may decide you don't need a new car after all.
I don't have any subaru experience, but plenty on the EVO. If you drive a car hard, don't get the EVO!! After 10k miles, replaced the clutch that's not covered under warranty, cost: $1000. At 15k miles, went to the track and launched hard a couple times, stock transfercase blew, cost: $2000. It was a fun car to drive, but expensive to maintain. I traded it in last November for a 2007 Si sedan. It has less power but is still very fun to drive, I actually like it better. More comfortable and it has cruise control!!
