Confessions of a Car Salesman
i read this about a year ago when it was first released. very good read, but you gotta read the whole thing.
everything capster said is right. ive been selling cars for 2 and a half years. new and used honda's. pretty much everything in this story happens at some point in time in the car business. but not everyone are crooks. people just need to research. there are reasons that kbb.com, edmunds.com, and intellichoice.com exist. its the people that dont visit those sites that get screwed.

Honda-s2000, If I walked into a dealer, and told them I had the money and would only pay the invoice price, would the majority of them (assuming its not something rare) do it?

well depending on the car of course... accord, civic, altima, camry, corolla, jetta, ect... then what a dealer is going to do is hassle you for an hour about the price, try there hardest to sell you say 1,000 over. then when you get up and walk away they call you back and sell you the car at invioce. you thinkin bout getting something?
My friend sells cars for a living. He says that the people who are assholes and walk away thinking they got ripped off usually are the ones that the dealership lost money on. While the smiling happy people who think they got a good deal get ripped off for 4000$+
All sales are based on a percieved value.
Do you need the STi, EVO, S2000, or what ever????? The answer is no, you want it if the salesman can show you numbers based on what you percieve to be acceptable. Thats what he is trying to do build value in your mind. This starts from the first words out of his/her mouth.
You can take an invoice and throw it out the window. It means nothing!!!! When cars are purchased there are kickbacks and extra discounts based on quantity.
So dont get pissed off at the sales guy. Do you research and hold you ground. Dont play their game. If you get cocky they are going to be an ass. Be cool and realize they want to sell you a car and the desk wants you to pay the most.
Its just my $.02 as I was a car salesman for about a year, 2 years ago...
