can an officer.....
i bet if any of you were cops for a day and had to put up with all the crap they had to you might have a different perspective on things... and second of all, cops are people, a large majority of people are idiots and assholes, so your bound to have some idiots and assholes that are also cops... but you can't say they are all one in the same... if its illegal and you do it anyways, deal with it, if you have a problem with it attack the system that made it illegal, not the guy doing his job enforcing them, i dont bitch at the lady behind the counter at wendy's because their burgers are overprice because she didn't set the price... and i hate hearing people complain about cops "breaking the law" in traffic, my ex girlfriend used to always bitch to me about some cop that was doing 55 in a 45 with out his lights on or changed lanes with out signaling, i've never seen a cop do donuts in the middle of broad street so either you live in the town super troopers was modeled after or you people needa let up on law enforcement... trust me i have some cop stories worth bitching about, most tickets like you got can be fixed by just slapping all the legal stuff on there and taking some polaroids to court, worked for me
and no i'm not a cop
and no i'm not a cop

I agree with most of you that cops seem to have nothing better to do than to mess with the import crowd and sportbike crowd. We are more noticeable.
When I retire from the military I plan on becomming a cop. But here's the difference:
I won't be targeting 18 year old kids; I'll be targeting the semi-trailer doing 80 in a 55 down the highway. I'll be targeting the blue haired old lady doing 30 in a 45. I'll be targeting the dude in the passing lane going the exact same speed as the person next to him in the travel lane so no one can pass. I'll be targeting the 5 cars in a row that still take that left hand turn AFTER their light has turned red so they are now blocking oncoming traffik.
People and cops and society always want to bitch and moan about road rage and those dumb kids out there on the streets.
I think we as a society should be concetrating on WHY I get so pissed off on my way home.
Sure someone speeding is bad; but there are a hell of allot of other things that can be even worse.
As for the exhaust situation; I think it's bullshit as well. I can be pulled for my Hiyama because a cop THINKS it's too loud? Show me your DB meter pal. But a dude on a harley can roll by at 9k rpm's blowing everyone's eardrums out and that's perfectly fine?
And btw; whoever is the person that claimed those exhausts were stock: talk to the dudes that pull of the mufflers and either throw on baffles or straight pipes for better performance and tq.
Those are far from stock and 100 times as loud. But they look stock so they aren't messed with.
Your best defense like the cop on here said is to go to court and have a lawyer. They are paid to know the law. Just because the guy who pulled you over is a cop doesn't mean he is an expert at the law. He can be wrong too.

... actually when i got my exhaust ticket a harley with open exhausts came by, it was like 2 a.m. and you could literally hear him 2-3 miles down broad street after he passed, i made a comment but the officer just gave me a ugly look... but my exhaust was loud so i deserved the ticket and i put the stock back on and they dismissed it, the judge was really cool even though the cop was a dick

I seriously don't know how this issue always seems to confuse people -- the main reasons that 'exhausts are illegal' (that phrase is misused and confusing) are not for sound purposes. A honda civic comes with an exhaust that's not noticeable -- when the owner modifies that exhaust (which is ILLEGAL) and it makes it louder, that lets an officer know that the exhaust has likely been modified. Harleys don't get pullec over because those loud exhausts are STOCK -- they are not modified. Even if an owner does modify it, an officer with anything less of a complete knowledge of Harley Davidson exhausts wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a stock exhaust, and a modified one. Aftermarket exhausts for motorcycles do not come with a huge red sign saying "this is a modified exhaust" to alert police officers. But when someone puts a huge, loud exhaust of their civic, they're just asking for attention.
Whether anyone 'agrees' with the laws on exhausts or not is besides the point. Cops are not legislators, they exist to enforce laws. They're humans and fuck up just like the rest of us. But it is their right, and their job to give tickets for vehicle violations, and if you choose to break the law, you're putting yourself at risk of paying the consequences.

cops in va will always profile imports and sportbikes. so don't give me any of that doing their job bullshit, there are REAL bad drivers out there speeding, reckless driving, NOT ACCELERATING IN THE FREAKING ACCELERATION LANE, etc. but yet they are gonna give me a muffler ticket while my car is parked. and they are doing their job. yeah ok
only way you won't get pulled over is if you buy a domestic.
