I bought my first car with only a bill of sale, not a title. It sucked, I'm not driving that car right now because of that. I went through everything I needed to obtain an abandoned vehicle title, but the DMV refused my claim. Now it's just a parts car.

if it has been sitting, your best bet is to call the police and have it towed, then the tow company charges, gets an abandoned title, and you buy it at their auction.
