I would suggest Alpine that is the only headunit/speakers/subs ect. ect i will ever buy to use. For speakers the type-e's suck tho so don't get them, type-s are good, and the type-r's are some of the best they make. They also make type-x's but they are expensive. Headunits just about all the ones they make are good just make sure you know you go cheap then you get average quaility the higher you go the better they are. \

Thats there website.

Whatever you say buddy. Please show me a good deck and 4 speaker setup you can get for $600. A nice, premium deck eat all that up.

Or do. While you explained speaker dynamics quite well, you failed to go into why having a good headunit is important as well. What do you think will push the sound/power to your speakers. See if you can answer the same question I posed above.

That's a fine beginner set, nothing spectacular. The deck is pretty much garbage though, check the specs on it.

What deck do you suggest? He said he loves his and you say its garbage so I want to know what you think good is.

I didn't go into the importance of the head unit, because its importance is very limited next to the importance of the speakers. It's very easy to make an amplifier that has exceedingly low distortion (compared to a speaker) at normal, healthy listening levels. Go with a trusted brand for reliability and construction concerns, and get only the options you need. Don't expect that the expensive head units with hundreds of features will sound any better than the less expensive units with fewer features.

Forgive me if I don't take you up on your challenge, as I'm not concerned enough with commercial products to justify researching them enough to make a specific recommendation.

I get my parts here:
http://www.madisound.com/catalog.html
here:
http://www.zalytron.com/
or here:
http://www.partsexpress.com/
My favorite brand is Seas for mids and tweeters, Peerless or Dayton for woofers.

Well you see that it is a lower end deck but for what it is I love it nothing but satisfaction clear, crisp sound. The better you find on Alpine the better the quailty. Most of the people i know love Alpine. They make some of the best headunits. Ive had sony and pioneer, ect. None compare. Plus i only paid $180 for mine. But the best thing to do is look into it and see if something interest you.

I like the Premier brand myself for numerous reasons, high preamp voltage being one and very low distortion. Check out the Permier P960, that's the one I'll be getting. Yes it is flashy and has lots of features, but most are very useful, its specs are very high, and a built in 13-band equalizer is a nice addition. The P1 is my favorite deck of all time, as well as many others.

I'm also a fan of some of the higher end Eclpise brand as they don't have built in power and allow for great tuning. I never said Alpine was bad, they make some good decks too. There are several Alpines I like as well. My JDM side even likes a couple Nakamichi's.
