for those who work at, Cox // Verizon FiOS
The only way to get hired at Verizon now is to look on their web site for an open position and apply. After that, they will schedule you for testing. The pay scale for an outside tech starts around $13/hr and right now tops out at $29.15/hr. It is a 4 yr pay scale, so if you get started off at the bottom, you get a raise every 6 months for 4 years til you are at top pay. After that you get a raise every August that is bargained for in the union contract, and changes yearly. Once you get in, you have access to all open positions and can apply to transfer within.
Also worth noting. they pay well but the hours tend to suck big time becuase schedules are chosen based on senority. Again, they pay you good and the benefits are great (like medical and dental are free for the great coverage), they pay for your college for anything as long as it isnt a phd or a law or med degree UPFRONT. As in, you tell the school to bill Verizon(theres a process to this obviously) and as long as you pass, you're fine. Honestly they pay you enough that you won't be able to change your job most likely without taking a pay cut.
They are hiring for something in the sales dept sortive. The key with VZ is just getting in. If you want more details OP, shoot me a pm. I started there in Feb so i've experience enough to talk about it.

I too worked at CCE in greenbrier for about a year, year and a half or so. It wasn't bad.
The sub contractors actually make more $$ than the cox employees. What was said earlier is true, you have noone looking over your shoulder, they train you for 2 weeks and you get paid for it. Get in a 7, leave with your route at 7:30. All equipment is provided. You will have to buy some tools and shirts, but they take it a little at a time from your pay. When I left I was making $700/week takehome. A co-worker was pulling $1200/week but did some shady installs. If you can get in good with the QA guy, and the person assigning routes you will be golden. Long hours tough. Easy work, but some houses suck ass. Its peice-work. I quit and joined the navy at 25 to get a security clearence to further my networking career. Worked as a net engineer for surry school system, and a net admin for NEXCOM among others. General dymanics joint forces command denied me employment due to lack of clearence, and they dont sponsor, so I caved in and signed over to the devil. Big mistake, now I make half what I made, and work twice as hard ?!?
BTW - you don't want to work CCE in newport news, most of the cable lines are areial. Southside has ALOT more burried lines !!
I highly reccommend this as a "foot in the door" for the telcom/network industry.

I would help you out man but I'm not in that group any more to support you guys. They split up my old role amongst two large groups. Now I'm sticking to Mobile Solutions.
