Thanks for your input, everyone. It's sounding like this might not be a very good place for me. I'd be on my own, so safety is a big concern.

Your best bet is to go there at the time of day when you will be there and see for yourself. All these statements are a point of view from those that come from different back grounds and areas.
I grew up (teen years) in P town and I never thought it was that bad. Watch your arse and avoid those that percieve to be a threat. You should do that no matter where you are..
