GOING TO JAIL!?!?!
It's not likely he'll go to jail. As long as all his fines and insurance is cleared up with the SR-22 and he has his license back and car registered and made legit, he shoudl be good. It's not to say, he'll get off scotch-free - you'll probably be slapped with some hefty fines.
I'm going to court for driving on a suspended license because I don't bother to read my mail... which makes me an idiot. The day I went to go pay my fines and get my license reinstated, I got pulled. Ironic as a motherfucker.
All my issues were resolved within less than a week after that. Just fix it all. Go to court in a BUSINESS SUIT. Act civil. Don't make excuses. Admit your stupidity and the judge may be willing to lighten the consequences of your actions. DO NOT MAKE EXCUSES. Excuses in court will only dig you deeper into shit.

Well.. here is the deal. You will have trouble finding insurance... period. An SR22 will make your insurance between $400 and $600 a month if you can find a company that will cover you. Also.. you will have to maintain constant insurance for a solid 2 years even if you dont own a car. If you try to just not own a car for 2 years and then get one. When you try to get insurance the 2 years will start then. So dont try and be smarter than the system just go with it. It will make things easier. You want advice. Right now.. go to a driving coarse in the local area. And on your court date be early. extremely early.. like before anybody else shows up. and as soon as you see your officer come in.. then you go an talk to him. Ask him if you pled guilty if he will reduce your sentence and tell him that you have completed your drivers coarse and are prepared to pay off your fines in payments. This will give your more on your record but usually this strategy keeps your ass out of jail. The judge with usually give you jail time that is suspended so if you fuck up again you will come back and serve that time. My other advice to you is. Dont drive again till you get your license back. If you get a habitual offender, your sorry ass will be going to jail for quite a while. Oh and one other thing... tell the judge good morning and that you would like to start off saying that you are sorry for your offenses and you are getting everything taken care of like you should have in the first place. Alot of judge's will respect a man that can admit that he fucked up and is willing to work on it.

SR22 insurance, does not cost 600/mo. It's all dependant on the company.
The insurance company I work for charges a ONE TIME 25 dollar fee and does not effect anyones payments.
Talk to the cop, yes.
Ask if he will reduce it if you plead guilty? No. Simply explain to him that you have a wife and kids and alot going on in life. You've taken necessary precautions to get everything taken care of and if he could help you out since your taking the chance to make thing right.
TAKE CARE OF EVERYTHING BEFORE COURT
Take a driving course? sure
Show up early? Why? You'll just be sitting there for even longer. You can only get into the courtroom once it's open.
Talk to the judge before he asks you anything? no. "good morning your honor" will do. He will give you a chance to say what you want.
Want a good Lawyer?
Larry Cardon is the shit.

1. Ask the officer if he'll let you plead guilty to a reduced charge.
2. Plead guilty regardless, admit you fucked up and don't try to make any excuses.
3. Dress and speak properly. Don't act like a nagger.
