Need a Diagnosis
2001 S-10 4.3. The temp is up, almost overheated last night, oil pressure is down, no check engine light is on, valves are ticking for the first 20 minutes or so of start up and then they stop, went to get the cooling system flushed today and they said its not holding pressure and was a gallon and a half low on coolant. There is no smoke, no sputter, no loss in power that I can tell. I haven't tried to get on it since it started heating, except once, and it still put 3 lengths on a Celica GT-S which is about normal. First I was thinking head gasket, but theres no smoke. So I'm thinking maybe intake gasket? Could be just a leak in a line too, but why would that affect oil pressure and cause ticking? Need some other thoughts. If it is head gasket, only quote I've gotten is $1000 which seems way too pricey for that kind of work. Any suggestions or better prices appreciated.

intake gasket is 4.2 hrs with AC interference
head gasket is 9.9 hrs with AC and CC interference.
intake set is about 75 bucks, due to the design of the gasket. you will also need valve cover gaskets (have to pull one VC to get the intake out) figure about an hour additional and 20 more dollars to replace that goddamn quick connect that always breaks in the intake too.
a head gasket set is 145 bucks.
first thing: check your oil. if it is foamy and white, it is a safe bet that you will need an engine. you can fix the coolant leak, but it WILL start knocking very soon.
