How to obtain and CDL?
you need to go and get your CDL learners and have it for six months before you can apply for any class of CDL.
get the learners, and then drive bigger trucks with a licensed CDL driver. then you go and take the road test and written test at the DMV.
if you are going for a class B, you can drive a straight truck with airbrakes. if going for a Class A, you have to drive a tractor with a trailer, or a dump truck with a trailer and airbrakes.
you have to provide a truck for the test, DMV does not.

I'm assuming to drive a tractor trailer inside the state is the same CDL for driving the ones that goin' to different states?

you only need your cdl learners for 30 days to test for a class A license as well. You take a written test to get the learners. There is no written test for the license.
I got my cdl through Schneider. They have a training center in Charlotte. Im not sure if they accept people that just want to get a cdl and leave, but for class A, they are one of the best to train with. There were several people in my class who had paid thousands at other training centers and were having to pay more money to schneider because they couldnt pass the license test. Anyway, I trained through them and went under a 1 year commit knowing I would probably quit before then, there is a $3400 fee if you quit within a year, which is comparable to what you would pay at other schools. They brought the truck to the dmv for the road test, you can only test at certain dmvs, marion was the closest for me. The road test was pretty easy, you have to straight line back and back around a weird curve which is actually a little tough. You also have to do a pretrip inspection and air brakes test. I saw 2 people fail that when I was testing. Anyway a good school will prepare you for the test. I dont know if you were going for class A but if so Id recommend schneider. Hope that helps.
