Spinning off the line is easier on a tranny then actually gripping or chirping correct?

I don't think the tranny knows whether or not you are hooking or spinning, it finds that out when you shift into 2nd and your syncros have to time the speed of the tire with the RPM of the motor, thats whats hard on the tranny. If you hook its easier on the tranny because the tire and rpm are in unison so the syncro doesn't have to go through excrutiating pain to go into another gear. When I hook my 1-2 shift is fairly smooth, but if I spin hard then sometimes it won't even go into 2nd gear because the syncro is worn and it can't match up the tire rpm with the crank rpm, or I grind the shit outta 2nd. Plus when you spin you haven't gained enough speed so when you do the 1-2 you are out of boost and have to wait for boost to build, in which case you lose a lot of time. For me, I just used he hulk approach and bang gears like there is no tomorrow, Dave can vouch.

I think it's just hard when you shift too early and don't ride 1st out all the way.

When you spin through first and shift into 2nd too early your tires will immediately slow down to the vehicles speed when you push the clutch in, which puts more of a variance of speed between the input shaft and output shaft of the transmission.

When you shift too early, your output shaft speed (vehicle speed) will be slower than normal once the tires finally hook when you push the clutch in.

Ah, I was more thinking the initial impact of the launch, where the extreme load from a heavy launch would have been dissipated by spinning tires/lack of traction, and it would be more of a gradual increase in load on the transmission. I didnt really think about syncros. So you feel riding 1st way out is better in this case as far as protection is concerned? It seems that everyone is in agreement that riding out 1st in the case such as I had where I was slipping badly would have been a better choice, but I'm talking about safety of the transmission now.

Don't worry, my best 60ft of the night was only a 2.0 on M/T slicks.
radials on DSMs will do one of the following out of the hole: dead hook, wheel-hop, or spin. backpedalling will cause a hop-a-thon which is a great way to destroy a center diff. AWD with power behaves a lot different than RWD. if you can't get it to dead hook, you'll have to spin through it to avoid hop.

I've always wondered why I have traction problems on race prepped tracks, but on the street I chirp and I'm gone. You would think logically that it would be the opposite. Maybe its the difference in asphault that grabs the tires better. At Natural bridge it seemed that they never prepped the track very well. My first run one night there I found traction and got my first 1.6 60ft on street tires, and then the rest of the night I spun every run.

i never got traction on the street well last season. traction was still absent at the track, but not as bad as the street. it all depends on the track i guess. also some cars just move better at the track. i have 2 friends where one can pull away easily from the other in a 1/4 in the street, but at the track it's the opposite. traction isn't an issue because both dead hook on both surfaces.
