They tell you that, that way you have to buy an engine sooner. Trust me, the oil still sludges up just fine.
Most of the Mercedes we service have a 15k counter that tells you to change the oil.
We still change them every 5k, b/c I've seen the inside of a motor after the 15k intervals.....

They said 12K, but my dad would never wait that long to get it done. Anyway, we didn't buy a car from them yet. They had a C230 for a pretty good price, just not quite as good as my dad wanted. They seem like pretty nice people though. We'll probably still buy from them because they are the closest dealer. My parents are just like that.
I've seem some oil analysis' on VWvortex where they were doing some sort of scientific breakdown on synthetic oil at 10k mile intervals (if I recall correctly) and it was still fine at 30k miles... It's been quite some time since I've seen it, so I'm not sure if my figures are completely accurate, but it was a pretty interesting read. I'll have to see if I can still dig it up.
I don't know that I would change it every 30k miles just because someone says I can, but I know I sure would like to see some sort of MythBusters episode on the topic

My old physics teacher said he only changed his oil 6 times since he bought his Geo Tracker (It currently had 184K miles). He told us something about the way it worked with a certain oil and how the oil wouldn't hardly break down. I don't remember exactly what it was, but he explained in physics terms. I thought that was pretty cool. He told us how much he saved over that time, something like $1348 if he got someone else to change it every 3K miles.
And my dad doesn't want her to get anything else. He doesn't want to spend anymore money. Midlife crisis time; he wants a Viper.

My mom likes the looks of it. I tried to get her to get something else (SLK350 roadster) but she wouldn't bite... She could care leess about power/electronics/etc. She just wants something she thinks looks good and is roomy.

But oh well. Enjoy it.
He want a brand new Viper or what?
