? about surge
May seem like a dumass question for turbos but imma just throw it out there. Compression surge, how bad could that be on the turbo? Ive messed with my BOV because it was opening too soon even when im in vacuum. So I added a couple washers then it would flutterdump. So I took them back out and it went back to opening too soon when not really needed. Then I added 3 more and lubed the spring and now all its doing is compression surge unless I hit full psi. Ive been looking around online and asking in other forums but all I basically get is people beating around the bush. So how bad is compression surge? I will prob. just get another BOV but dont want it to keep doing what its doing if its that bad for the turbo. Appreciate the feedback and if ya got a smartass response then
Its caused by the pressure pushing back on the compressor wheel and stalling it out. But in some cases it can happen so fast that it can actually destroy the bearings, wheel and possibly the shaft itself.
Most common though is the thrust bearing being damaged/destroyed.
This happens when you let off the throttle and the BOV doesnt allow pressure refief thus building excessive pressure againts the wheel.

The BOV (TurboXS) was already installed with the top mount when i purchased the car and it would sound like it was going off to early. Then i went to a front mount and then started the surge noise. So that is when i started messing with it.
It's the BOV. That BOV sticks really badly. Back in the day, I tried two different ones on my WRX with many different turbo/intercooler combinations and they both pretty much sucked. Get a HKS and that will fix your problems (and sound better too).
