I have been practicing my heal and toe for about a year. I needed to add some pedal covers to bridge the huge gap of my pedals. (In my car) Heel and toe is not really "heel" it is more Ball of foot and side of foot. You use the ball of your foot to brake and roll the side of the foot to blip the throttle. This is a required skill for track driving to be smooth.

I rev match every downshift, everywhere I go, just to insure it's habit. It's actually really hard to do unless your standing the car on it's nose because if your not trying to push the brake pedal through the floor, it's have to maintain a constent pressure.
just a stupid little video deryl happened to get of me at expo rev matching

i have to do it like that because of the pedal placement in my car (s13) and how damn tall i am. if i try to do it the traditional way, if you can call it that, then my knees just hit the steering wheel. so it's much easier for me to sidestep it like you.

also, i do it everytime i downshift too, just makes everything smoother

I actually blip the throttle with my heel while pressing down the brake pedal with ball of my foot.

my feet look like this when I'm heel-toe shifting:

left foot ---> | \ <--- right foot

I sort of 'kick' the gas pedal while firmly pressing down the brake pedal with the ball of my foot.

works for me, still a need a bit more practice, but when I get it just right it's buttery smooth

How you do it depends greatly on if the gas pedal is attached to the floor or suspended from above. Race cars have the pedals on the floor for the most part.

Another vote here for the "rolling" the foot technique. There is no way my knees will clear the steering wheel the other way. They don't clear the wheel NOW!!

I heel-n-toe everywhere. My passengers (if they know how to drive stick) look at me funny... In fact, it's actually harder for me to heel-n-toe at the track than it is on the street... (brake pedal height problem)

If you roll your foot, this problem goes away as well.

Andy - who has a floor-mounted pedal in one car and a suspended one in the other...

I'd love to practice heel-toeing, but the pedals in my Focus are horrible for me. I just can't seem to reach both easily.

So all I can do for now is rev match.
