Default V Dub Tranny help

Hey guys, my buddies got 2000 Passat wagon, its an Automatic with the slap shifter type thing in it. It is stuck in 2nd gear. She mentioned something to me about a senoid, and I guess some one told her the timing belt was the reason it was not working. Any body know?
