Default Turn signals not working.

Hey guys.

I have an 88 Mustang and I cannot seem to figure out what is wrong with my turn signals. They recently just stopped working. The hazards still work, but if I signal to turn left/right, they don't come on. I'm tired of looking like an asshole that doesn't know how to use his signals or looking like an idiot waving my arm out the window.

I tried replacing the relay, but of course something that easy wouldn't fix it. I checked all the connections behind the hazard switch and right by the blinker stem (I guess that's what it's called) and I couldn't find anything loose. I felt around in the dash to see if I could find any splices in the wires or if they were pinched and found nothing. I checked the fuse and that is good as well. All of the wiper functions on the blinker stem still work.

The only other thing that seems to be on the list is the blinker stem, but they seem to be hard to find and a little pricey. Latemodelrestoration has them for the 90-93 Mustangs. Not sure if there's a difference, but I assume there is if they specify it that way. I really prefer not to throw parts at problems, so I was hoping for some ideas about what else could be the culprit or if there's a way to troubleshoot the problem.

Thanks

Did you check the voltage at the turn signals? More than likely your wires are grounding out at some point in the system probably due to the age of the vehicle, I.e. cracked rubber insulating or exposed wires touching each other or something to ground it out.

If the hazards work and the turn signals don't, your problem is most likely in the control circuit that enables the turn signals. Grab a multimeter and start checking power to the stalk switch and if the stalk switch is outputting properly when activated, etc. The hazards are the key to this and can tell you where the split occurs between things that work and things that don't.

Some schematics and a switch diagram will make things much easier to track down.

I appreciate the tips. I'm going home for Thansgiving, so my dad and I can get the voltmeter out. He's better with that stuff than I am anyway.

If you changed the flasher by the fuses, drop your glovebox door and see if there is a flasher inside the box to the left. If there is, change it!
